Is there really anything more synonymous with being a teenager than starting your own band? Many would argue that there’s very little that competes with the ingenuity and creativity of making your own band, and to pair that with the rebelliousness and free spirit of a teenager with a connection to the arts and most importantly- a connection to music.
The homecoming carnival set the stage for two new bands to carve out their names into Perry’s memory as they performed with confidence and skill, playing cohesively and skillfully. These future stars were very kind to let us get a few interviews and tell us their inspirations, stories, and hopes of the future as they continue to create music.
Dylan Smith, a senior, plays the guitar for their band Knull, he plays the guitar and band and has been playing those instruments since his freshman year at Perry, “ I really got into it because of guitar club.” He says his inspiration is the popular band Pink Floyd, and of course it has an impact on the music the band plays, mostly rock or something similar.
Evan Bullington, a senior, has been playing instruments since he was two, but has only been playing guitar for a couple of years now. Knull has a few upcoming songs and is even planning to create an album together, his favorite part “It sounds obvious, but just, playing the music, you know? When you just sync up with all the guys playing the same thing, it’s pretty cool- it’s something that not a lot of people will experience.”
Andrew Pennington, another senior, has been playing both electric and acoustic guitar for three years. He’s not the only that believes that the band has potential to become something more than a hobby “I mean, that would be like the dream for sure” and with the practices they hold every week it’s not hard to envision the bright future Knull has in store.
Knull certainly left an impression on the Perry puma legacy, and they weren’t the only to do so with eloquence and skill, the newest band Etterath.
Arlo Maka, another senior, has always liked music because of the vulnerability it allows him to feel. “I think it’s one of the easiest ways to express emotion and it shows a lot of vulnerability in the lyrics where you don’t have to necessarily say what you’re thinking because you can play it.” He plays both the drums and guitar and is exceptionally well at both, showcasing his talented performances.
Alex Aldulaimi, a senior who’s been playing drums for about six years shares his love and passion for music and the band, describing all the hard work and the practices that go into the core parts of the band. Alex says that his inspiration from the band comes from listening to the drummer from the band ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers.’ He isn’t the only one hoping to make a career out of his drumming skills.
And even though these bands are still in the beginning stages of carving out their name and fanbases and creating their own style, everyone at Perry believes in them.
