Throughout the school year, many drives have been created to help and support the community. Connect 4 College club hosted a competition for all clubs about non-perishable food drives to help the Chandler CARE Center. The National Honor Society won with 159 cans, Project Humanity was in second place with 31 cans and Theater and Leo Club tied with 17 cans each. DECA hosted two of their own drives, separately, including a candy and book drive. Both drives from DECA consisted of dropping the items outside of the Marketing classroom or around campus.
The Connect 4 College food drive consisted of a competition between clubs to raise food donations. Junior Rebekah Bear explained “ It’s an annual thing, we started last year because our sponsor Mrs. Kwong told us about how the care center wanted donations for a food driveThis drive did not have a group of people in specific as it was for everyone that needed it. Bear declared that the drive was a huge success, she said the Chandler CARE center collected 228 cans.
National Honor Society also completed a food drive for those that needed help during the holiday season. The drive brought not only compassion and connectedness but it also made people felt valuable. National Honor Society senior Grayson Cagle mentioned, “I want to give [people] something to look forward to for the holidays and anything I can help is always better…I am helping them feel like they have a place in the community, that people are looking out for them and that they will always have a place at Perry to help them out.”
The candy drive from DECA was aimed towards the firefighters. The firefighters gave the candy to the kids during emergency calls to calm them down. As a result this could make the firefighters job more easier since they can focus on something or someone else. The candy helped the kids to calm their stress during these emergency calls. Senior Logan Kady is the competition: role-play of DECA. He said “They [firefighters] do not get as much recognition as they should and they do not have that type of stuff, it is just nice for them.”
The book drive consisted to drop books for the members who would give them to the kids. This kid needed an education or that had one that didn’t give them enough of what they needed for their correct growth .This helped in their development to read and connect with the people in their community that helped them. Senior Charlie Barkmann is the president of DECA. She explained “A part of DECA is that we just value community service and helping out our community and helping back to those great people that help us.”
