The 68 Annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 1 brought both surprising wins and memorable performances, but also stirred debate over which artists may have been left out of the ceremony and which artists were snubbed. While some artists took home well-deserved trophies, others who shaped the past year in music were noticeably overlooked.
Snubbed is defined as ignored and in the case of the Grammy Awards, it mainly refers to artists and nominees who left without trophies or the recognition many believe they deserved. The Recording Academy’s decisions sparked discussion amongst fans and critics alike. While stars such as Bad Bunny and Billie Eilish walked away with major awards, other artists such as Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber were unrecognized.
One of the most surprising snubs of 2026 was Sabrina Carpenter. Especially after a year of success, viral performances, and high streaming numbers reaching over 600 million spotify streams, it came as a shock to many that the artist was unable to secure at least one major award. She is listed among the night’s most significant snubs with publication Variety claiming, “When it comes down to it, there was just too much competition for all of this year’s multiple nominated pop superstars to win something.” (Variety).
Beyond individual artists, the broader issue is how the Grammy Awards define excellence. Streaming numbers, cultural impact, and fan engagement now play a larger role in how music spreads, specifically through younger listeners. Grammy recognition does not always align with what dominates playlists and social media.
For example, artists such as The Marías and Sombr built dedicated followings and large streaming numbers over the past year with Sombr reaching 58.9 monthly listeners and the Marías reaching 37.7 million monthly listeners. Despite this, they continue to struggle to break into larger categories. This also raises questions about whether the Grammy Awards reflect evolving music taste or continue to favor more traditional structures.
Although, thousands of records compete for limited nominations, and certain tastes will always influence outcomes. The Academy has mentioned snubs to be “heartbreaking” and have shown more efforts to improve diversity and representation in voting.
Still, frustration continues as the Grammys are known to be a musician’s highest honor, so when culturally dominant artists are overlooked, it creates a disconnect between the industry and audience. In a more positive aspect, the 68 Grammy Awards did make history for giving awards to a Spanish-language recording as well as its first award to a K-pop recording.
Awards do not define talent, and while the significant snubs of this year’s Grammy Awards were frustrating, it does not diminish artistic success.
