A book club was created to bring a warm environment and somewhere to belong for enthusiastic readers. The president, sophomore Aubrey Miller, had the passion to create the club because she noticed something that lacked related to books and reading.
Miller said, “The club offers a community where you can talk without judgment.” She mentioned that people could not meet up to talk about their interest in books, and she felt that the creation of the club would help the students to feel that they belonged.
The club allowed students to be heard without judgment and welcomed them anytime. The book club was a free space for everyone, even if it was people who did not read that much, they could join and build relationships. The club was also a key that allowed students could start anything if they were interested.
The club just finished reading Scythe, a book about two teenagers, Citra and Rowan, who were chosen to become apprentices of a professional destroyer. Scythe Faraday, who liquidates people to control the population.
The social media manager, sophomore Addison Duncan, mentioned, “The club offers just being able to communicate with others and discuss your interest in reading… it allows people to discuss their interests without feeling like they aren’t welcomed.”
Sophomore Ariana Luna joined because her friend was an officer, and even though she does not read that much. This club allowed her to read more, Luna said, “ The club offers a community where you can just share and read together.”
Freshman Paola Delgado mentioned that the club was a good way to meet new people. She said, “ I feel like reading was a fairly niche hobby on topics around school nowadays. I feel that being in the book club allows you to talk with people who actually care about what you like and listen to what you have to say.”
Club advisor Erika Stueber mentioned that because Miller was so passionate about the club, she felt motivated to help. Stueber said, “We felt that we could do justice to the group by being co-sponsors and helping out the best way that we could.”
The club met on Thursday, the members sat on the floor and talked about the chapters they read and discussed what they thought would happen next. Sometimes they would bring food or snacks to share with the club.
