Joi Morrison is a level 10 gymnast at Arizona Dynamics and a senior here. She has been doing gymnastics for 15 years and has no plans of stopping after high school.

In 2017, Oregon State University offered Joi a full-ride gymnastics scholarship and she verbally committed to the school. However, being just a sophomore at the time, she had a lot more time to explore her options. Two years later, the University of Michigan offered her a scholarship of the same kind.

“I’m very strong in my faith and I believe that God opened that door for me, and it was even bigger and better than I imagined,” she says about the offer.

Joi had to pick between the two schools and relied on her faith to help her make the right decision.

“My family and I, we prayed about it and I just thought ‘this is amazing’ and knew it was the place for me,” she says about choosing Michigan over Oregon.

The University of Michigan is a Division 1 school and Joi says she is excited to meet the girls and be a part of the college gymnastics environment.

“Having those girls that are like, amazing, will challenge me, even more, to be the best that I can be and I look forward to that,” she says.

Joi signed to be a wolverine in Nov. 2019 and plans to attend later this year.

With her talent, it is no surprise she is going to one of the best colleges for gymnastics in the country.

Last year at Regionals, Joi pulled out a near perfect vault; scoring a 9.950 (the highest score anyone can receive is a 10.0).

This was just one factor that led Joi to qualify for JO Nationals in Indianapolis. She had a great competition, ending the night with a personal best all-around of 38.675 and placing 5th out of all the girls her age.

Scores these high are not very common for level 10’s, but they are for college gymnastics. At Division 1 schools like Michigan, the scores are usually above a 9.7. So considering her average vault score of 9.8, it seems she will fit right in when the time comes.
