Passing down the throne

Students celebrate together during a Friday night home football game.

Throughout the course of last year, Perry’s athletics were supported by the biggest student section yet. Led by frontman DJ Patchet, the students cheered for the athletes on their way to victories in big games such as the annual Salt River baseball game against Basha. With Patchet graduating last year, someone needed to step up and fill the void. Thankfully, senior Max Mills was that someone.

“After the final game of last year, DJ told me he was passing the throne onto me,” said Mills. “I try to model what I do after him, since he was the best to do it.”

When asked about the responsibility of leading the students, Mills seemed confident.

“It really is a big responsibility,” explained Mills. “Luckily I’m not alone in it and have my team to help out.”

Accompanying Mills in the student section are seniors Kyle Huckaby, Jordan Howard, Austin Roccia, Luke Siwek, and Justin Rodriguez. One problem that concerns the group is the amount of athletes participating in it.

“About half of us {Siwek, Rodriguez, and Howard} are going to be out during basketball season,” explained Howard.  “We’re going to miss being in the stands, but we can count on everyone to be cheering us on during the games.”

Although half of the group may be missing in the stands for the basketball season, Austin Roccia is still optimistic.

“We plan on getting ‘insane in the membrane’ for basketball this season,” shared Roccia. “We’re definitely going to be supporting each other throughout the year.”

Mills and the rest of the “gang” are looking forward to fulfilling the legend that is DJ Patchet, and successfully passing on the throne to another generation.
