Teenagers are usually influenced by new trends discovered through their environment that can include friends and social media. Some of these trends include makeup, clothing, hairstyles and catchphrases. Most teens imitate these new trends because they find them interesting or feel a necessity to be included in trends.
Spanish teacher Norma Rios has noticed a lot of the trends her students have been involved in like types of clothing or haircuts trends. She mentioned, “Mostly among boys, that bleached blonde seems to be back in style.” As Rios mentioned, the “bleach buzz” hairstyle constantly captures students’ interest, and for women, the wolf cut has become popular. Some students can follow these trends because of the desired feeling of inclusion.
Pinterest is a social media app that is used to find ideas and inspiration to create or publish new outfits, art, and much more. Sophomore Bryn Rorke commented that she uses this platform to find inspiration for hairstyles. She explained that when she does not know what to wear to school, she finds inspiration through social media. As social media can create a certain reliance on teenagers.
Sophomore Sofia Handlong gets most of her inspiration from others. Handlong mentioned that the 2000s clothing comeback has had an impact on her and her style. She said, “I see it and I want to do it.” Teens can tend to follow what they see from others to be able to match their friends or people they admire.
Influencers have had a great impact on teens, as some adolescents can gather ideas and get inspiration from these influencers. Senior Alexa Matteson is an influencer on TikTok; most of her content is about outfits or promotions for brands that reach out to her.
Senior Sophia Crowl posts on Instagram and just recently obtained account verification. Most of her posts are about dancing, pictures of her with her friends and dance competitions. Crowl said, “I love spreading positivity and I love to connect with people.” Crowl hopes her role as a dancer influences others to be more confident in themselves.
Students’ inspirations can come from old trends or new ones that are either influenced by others or the media. Sometimes, these trends allow teenagers to try something new or find a new style they enjoy to have a feeling of belonging.
