Our Take: Fantasy Sports

Fan involvement in sports has increased over the years. One of the causes for this is creation of fantasy sports. Fantasy leagues can be found in all types of professional sports such as football, basketball, baseball and golf.

Fantasy sports date back to the late 1940’s right after WWII. Back then, fantasy sports were basically the same as they are today; people picked players and gained points on how well they performed.

Fantasy leagues have gone from simple bets to weekend hangouts and small “business- like” meetings. This is where the fan involvement takes place. The fans feel like they are making executive decisions for a team when really they are making a minor adjustment to their fantasy roster.

Something that has gone too far in fantasy sports is how they are shown on television. Every day on ESPN or NFL Network there is some sort of show on fantasy baseball or football with guys breaking down player performance and arguing if a player has received the correct amount of points.

Fantasy leagues are fun for every sports fan because it gives them another dimension of their sport they have invested in. It’s all fun and games until you miss out on the playoffs and lose a chunk of change.
