As students reach their final year of high school, they tend to have this glamorized version of what senior year would be like. They imagined lighter workloads, more freedom, and memorable moments with friends before graduation. While some of those expectations came true in small ways, the reality of senior year turned out to be more layered than many had anticipated.
Senior Julie Jacobson entered her final year with a positive mindset. Moments like homecoming and school assemblies stood out as highlights, creating memories that felt especially important knowing they were some of the last before graduation.
Even with those moments, there were still aspects of senior year that were difficult. She mentioned that the hardest part of senior year was, “Staying motivated knowing that you’ve already been accepted to college.” With the next chapter in sight, focusing on daily assignments required extra effort. Jacobson had expected senior year to feel lighter, but her classes remained demanding in unexpected ways.
Seniors Jessica Le and Ellie Tatham described their senior year as both stressful and difficult, with pressure from schoolwork, college applications, and maintaining grades.
Tatham had once believed senior year would bring more free time and fewer responsibilities. Instead, she found herself balancing assignments, studying, and work, which left less space for the relaxed social life she had imagined. Even so, she noted that these challenges pushed her to become more organized and aware of her priorities.
Le shared a similar experience. She expected more opportunities to slow down and relax, but her classes required consistent effort throughout the year. She spoke about the pressure of senior year, “The closer graduation gets, the more stressful it is.”
Despite the stress, small moments of ease still appeared throughout the year. Tatham mentioned, “I feel like I have a lot more freedom with an early release schedule.” Early release schedules, school events, and time spent with friends offered brief breaks from academic pressure. Even when those moments were short, they helped balance the more demanding parts of senior year.
In the end, senior year was not entirely what many had expected. It was not fully easy, but it was not only stressful either. It became a time of adjustment, and preparation for what came next. Between the pressure and the memories, it marked the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another.
