Schools see larger enrollment sizes as more houses are being built

Schools that are built for 2.5 thousand students are being packed with 4 thousand students.

When more houses are being built in an area, more people will flock to that area for those better housing options. That area may have a good school district, job opportunities, a sturdy economy, and much more that makes it a desirable place to live.

The Chandler community and Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) is no exception to this phenomenon. More houses equals more people. According to Principal Serrano, schools that are made for 2.5 thousand students are being packed with 4 thousand students.

Emily Meyers, a senior who has been exposed to the realtor business explained, “there is an increase in the amount of homes being sold in the district just because of how good of a district [CUSD is]. People are moving from Gilbert to here because of [the district] too.”

When looking for a good neighborhood, parents tend to look for a good school district to send their child to. CUSD has been an A Plus district for the past four years. The opportunities offered in the district are academic programs, athletic opportunities, and after school activities.

Serrano commented, “Chandler has a good reputation. We don’t have a lot of unrest here among students. We also have the most open enrollment students in the district.”

However, there are students who are denied enrollment to schools for many reasons. Some of those reasons include but are not limited to behavior issues, grade problems, if they are not on track to graduate, or if the student has not finished fulfilling their suspension at another school. Serrano has the ability to revoke the student’s open enrollment.

Senior Dallin Winward has been a boundary exempted student for his whole school career. He chose to attend Perry because “I wanted to stay with my friends.”

As more houses are built, more people will move into those houses. Those people will end up attending CUSD schools and those schools will see an increase in enrollment size. Principals will see an increase in boundary exemption forms and at some point, the schools will have to expand in order to house those students. This may cause a need for an override in the budget plan for the schools within the Chandler District so they can adjust for the influx in enrollment size.
