For many students, extracurricular activities are a way to explore interests, develop new skills, and connect with other students. DECA member Junior Charlie Barkman has turned her extracurricular into more than just a fun activity. DECA has been a gateway into the world of business and marketing. Barkman explained DECA a little bit, sharing, “DECA is an organization that prepares students for the business world through mock role-plays and networking.”
Barkman joined DECA her sophomore year, drawn in by field trip opportunities and hands-on business experiences that DECA offers. Her decision to join has paid off, and in the last two years, Barkman has built an impressive resume through DECA. In just her first year, Barkman received a test medal at the district level, followed by a finalist medal and second place in the Start-Up Business plan category at the state level.
Her successes in DECA have led her to the International Career Development Conference, or ICDC, where she placed top 20% of competitors once again in the Start-Up Business plan. Now in the 2025 school year, Barkman has continued to win awards at DECA competitions. Once again at the district level, she received another test medal and second place in the Goosechase competition. Most recently, she earned a finalist medal and took home DECA glass for finishing second place in the Independent Business Plan category at the state level.
DECA is more than just awards for Barkman. She views DECA as a way to build her future as it provides her with hands-on experiences that will prepare her for real world business scenarios. “DECA is helping me build my future by putting me in business scenarios that I might find myself in later on.” She explained, “It also helps by providing networking experiences that could open me up to scholarship and job opportunities.” As Barkman’s senior year approaches, she hopes to continue her DECA success and continue building her business resume.
