Miss. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children Review

Miss. Peregrine’s home for peculiar children is a compelling story filled with courage, friendships, and and love story that will melt your heart. Directed by the creepily brilliant Tim Burton who is responsible for multiple award winning moves; and this movie is no different.

The main character Jake Portman, played by Asa Butterfield, is thrown into this topsy-turvy world of monsters and madness as he now has to help save a group of peculiar children and their care taker form bloodthirsty monsters. Jake is a lovably dorky teenage boy that almost any moody can teenager can relate to; with his wanting to establish his freedom and having a feeling that he doesn’t belong within our ‘normal’ society; but when placed among those that he has common ground with he learns the greatest lesson of all, true love comes from within. All the characters in this movie have a familiar feel to them. Miss. Peregrine (Ava Green) conveys a feeling of warmth and genuine kindness. She continually puts her peculiar children above herself. Emma Bloom (Ella Purnell) is a sweet and optimistic girl that is lighter than air who believes in the best people have to offer. Though Emma is a positive girl she is not unaware of the dangers that lie in the shadows.

Though the plot seems cliche, a teenage boy thrown into a life or death situation where he finds self worth and a love that crossed over time itself; although in the hands of Tim Burton this movie is given a new life away from the cliche of fantasy movies with its kirky characters and incredibly creepy villains and dark humor. The monsters in this movie are CGI and looked surprisingly real looking. The overall look of them is a little cartoon looking but that is just the Tim Burton way and it works really well with this unreal story.

This movie though rated only pg-13 is definitely not for younger children. I would not call this movie graphic but it does include mild violence using weapons and the monsters in this movie are unsettling, along with that is shown with them eating eyeballs. Also there are some mature themes that some younger viewers may not fully comprehend.

But overall I would consider this movie a must watch, especially if you are Tim Burton fan.
