Seniors are beginning to reach the end of their high school careers in any hobby they took part in. Whether it was football, basketball, band, orchestra, robotics, art and many more. The art competitions,DECA competitions, and photography competitions have happened or have an upcoming event.
The upcoming competition is the ICDC for all students apart from DECA. The president of DECA senior Charlie Barkman stated “ The ICDC is where everyone from every single state goes to compete if they made the top 5 in their state…we compete all together in business scenarios and there are finalists and could win DECA glass.”
Barkman stated “ I am excited because I have never been to Atlanta of course I am going to be a little sad but I am still excited…To prepare I refined my business plan for state and practiced our presentation and took feedback.”
The art class has attended the CUSD district art competition. Seniors Alexandria Portenier, Madison Smiles, Alyzah Tojino, and Srina Frank all participated and submitted their own creative art pieces to the competition. Art has many different definitions and overall it is a way to express feelings within or current mindset. When submitting the pieces these four girls had to make a piece that came from the heart. Tojino stated “When I was creating my art I wanted the background to be inspired by impressionism so I blended it out so the focal point would be clearer…The only challenges I faced was it took a very long time getting the colors, shading, and mixing correct.”.
Alexandria said “I used mix media. I used about four different types such as spray paint, acrylic, watercolor to make the background abstract so the dog was in the middle and stood out…The challenges I had were trying to get my dog to actually look like my dog.”
Madison claimed “I used a combination of different mediums. I took a newspaper that had part of my name in it and an article about ROTC then I just painted over it…The challenge I had was trying to map out the ratio my artwork was based on because it took a lot of math.”
Srina Frank said “Recently my dog passed away and she was everything to me from my whole childhood and that piece felt gone so right after she passed I made that piece. I painted over a photograph I have taken and painted over each stroke I thought of it as remembering the details of her face. I added gold because it represented beyond the rainbow because in older paintings they used it to represent something higher…The only challenges I had were painting on the foil or worrying about ruining the photo.”
Photography had their final competition at FBLAin Tucson which is a giant conference of schools from around the state where they all compete in different competitions. Senior Charlie Stoner and his partner Junior Logan Merlo finished first place in Commercial Photography. Stoner stated “The judge first had us present our photos which included describing how each one was shot and edited … .We won the state with a question along the lines of..“ I have seen a lot of photos today, what makes yours special.” to which we answered “ We have such a personal connection to what we are photographing the sick is what bonds Logan and I together and shows how passionate we really are about the brand we are promoting.”
