My Lady Jane by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows is romantasy based on the life of Lady Jane Grey but with a few fixes. Dying King Edward VI has named Lady Jane his successor and she is forced into an arranged marriage with a total stranger named Gifford Duley but Gifford is an Eðian who is the someone born with the ability to turn into one specific animal. Gifford can’t control his power; he is an animal during the day and a man at night. Jane and Gifford make a deal that Jane will help Gifford control his power.
In history Jane was executed nine days into her reign as queen so this book is an alternate version of her story. I related a lot to Jane with her sibling dynamic, her sassy personality and her passion for books. Jane was ahead of her time; she had dreams to be free and to become an author of medical books. Jane’s husband Gifford Duely is one of the most sarcastic characters that I have ever read about which is why I loved him. Jane and Gifford’s relationship in the story is such an interesting couple because although they do not like each other they also do not trust anyone more than each other which I loved for their dynamic. Jane is a smart, strong minded character who over-thinks about making any decision and Gifford is an unapologetic, sassy and smart mouth person, who never thinks just does. I would say that Jane and Gifford love story in a slow burn, it takes most of the book for them to fall in love with one another.
The story was so funny and had a mixture of truths and made up from the true story of lady Jane Grey. I do not laugh because of my books but this one had me laughing in the middle of any room and once I could stop laughing I immediately would go to tell anyone who would listen to it. The jokes and pun are not the only thing that made it funny, also just purely the irony of the story.
The plot twists I never saw coming and the characters coming together to not only save themselves but everyone. The magical take on the story is a fun twist to this story. I find it so interesting that people can only turn into one animal and one only. This book was a great story that I would recommend to anyone who loves history and romance with a good politics sub plot. This book also has a show adaptation which I would also recommend.
