Senior Peter Beatty played a key role in recording assemblies, capturing major events like the senior prom and winter assemblies throughout the school year. Working behind the scenes during these events, Beatty was responsible for filming and helping produce footage for students, staff, and families, occasionally watching. Since getting involved early in high school, he has contributed to preserving important school moments that many students experienced from the stands.
While students watched from the stands during assemblies, Beatty worked behind the scenes to make sure each moment was captured and projected. From setting up the camera to recording and producing footage, he played a consistent role in filming assemblies throughout the years.
Beatty stated, “I got involved in my sophomore year, and my teacher just asked if I wanted to film the assembly…that was the first time we’ve done it in a while, and I just continued doing that up until now.” Beatty explained how he first got involved in recording assemblies and filming overall, as he began recording assemblies after a period when they had not been filmed.
Recording assemblies may seem simple from the outside, but the process requires skill, focus, and attention to detail. Beatty expressed, “It’s very up close and personal. There are a lot of things going around, and it’s hard not to bump into people and get in the way.” Managing moving camera angles and staying aware of surroundings made the role more complex than it appeared.
Through this experience, Beatty developed skills that extended beyond the classroom. Beatty explained how working behind the camera helped him build these skills: “I’ve developed skills like stabilizing the camera and being able to capture moments that people may not see from the stands, as well as being able to hold that camera for long periods of time.”
Film teacher Brian Brenier explained, “I picked Peter to record the assemblies because he’s great and always shows up on time, he’s also always willing to adapt. He was always willing to try something new. There are a lot of moving parts that aren’t present in what you see on the screen, such as wireless connections and things in the camera.” With graduation approaching, Beatty’s work behind the camera helped ensure that these school moments were captured and remembered.
