Clubs deserve spotlight

The crowds at  sporting games cheer with hope and excitement. They have anticipated these games for weeks and are eager to support their friends. While at the chess club tournaments, the attendance and support is in low supply. Wait, Perry has a chess club? Yes… sadly several students are unaware of what clubs are offered at their own high school. Throughout the years, sports have seemed to pull in a great excitement and a positive response. Students attend games, cheer on peers, and anticipate the upcoming games. While sports make up a great part of Perry, clubs play a large part as well.

At Perry, there are over 40 clubs not including sports. While there are 20 sports listed available on the club list. In newspaper, there are three pages filled with sport news in every regular issue. While clubs do not even have one page designated for them. In assemblies, at least fifteen minutes of time is given to the sports to allow each team to receive attention. Yet clubs such as Key Club receive no attention for their service and volunteering? Even with a large amount of clubs on campus, little attention and consideration is directed towards them.

Clubs provide students opportunities to learn values just as in sports. Through social interaction with a certain subject that they love, students can gain leadership skills, learn responsibility, and become confident in what they want to pursue when they become older. Students on campus may not be in sports, but inside clubs they are finding who they are whether it be through volunteer work or networking with others.

Clubs offer great benefits to students but are left on the back burner for school spirit. Sports are great and all yet they take over the entire spotlight.Share the love and recognize that athletes are not the only students of importance.
