Sophomore, Evan Demelo, earned the opportunity to join the MAYO Clinic, over this past summer. The program is designed to prepare students for careers and opportunities in the medical field. Demelo explained how two impactful teachers on campus helped set him up for success at the MAYO Clinic.
Demelo mentioned he learned a great deal from the program and got a deeper understanding of the medical field because of it. Demelo also explains how it helped expand his knowledge about the fundamentals of medicine and different careers. The application process for this distinguished program was extensive. Demelo stated, “You had to write a series of essays and answer some questions to get into the program.” Demelo also added that there were two significant teachers that gave him the base to get into this program.
English teacher Penny Snyder had Demelo in her class for both his freshman year and his sophomore year. Snyder commented that Demelo is an amazing student, diligent and very conscientious about his classwork. She claimed, “I feel like I didn’t do much because he came in with a really good writing foundation…Just kind of helping him cite and explain then elaborate a quote.” Snyder mentioned that Demelo’s exceptionalism as a student will be one she remembers.
Another teacher that Demelo mentioned is John Prothro, the AP World History teacher. Prothro exclaimed, “Some have the willingness to work, he has that. Being really intelligent naturally, coupled with the willingness to work to improve, sets Mr. Demelo apart from other just smart students, because he has both intelligence and the willingness to improve.” He also mentioned that Demelo was fun to have in class and that he challenged Prothro.
Demelo is stated to be an intelligent, conscientious, and memorable student by his teachers and peers. Through hard work, time, dedication, and diligence Demelo was able to earn the opportunity to become a scholar of the Mayo clinic, giving him experience in the medical field.
