The theatre department competed at the EAFT festival, bringing home multiple awards in performance, acting, and technical categories. After months of preparation and consistent practice, students proved their dedication by earning recognition across every event they entered.
The process and various performances took dedication and teamwork. Theatre student, senior Sophie Latuff, explained the events she was in, “I performed a duo musical song from Shrek, I think I got you beat. Then we had a whole group song from the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee called Pandemonium, choreography from Matilda.”
To produce a successful performance, a dedicated and reliable tech crew is essential. The tech crew demonstrated their skills by doing a relay race with different tech challenges.
Senior Kyrie Sevilla explained, “There are four challenges. A light hang, which is where you hang a light fixture on a pole and set it up to make a shape on the wall. Cable Coiling, which is coiling cables in a specific way and placing them neatly in a box. Knot tying, which involves tying three types of knots to a pole and a bucket to create a holding system. Legging a platform, putting bolts on tables to connect its legs.”
Theatre teacher, Shawna Marquis, played a huge role in teaching and helping the students to thrive and be able to reach their full potential. Marquis said, “I would say their work ethic goes a long way. When they are supposed to be practicing, they’re usually practicing and they put in the time that is necessary to be successful.”
All of the students’ hard work paid off in winning their awards through commitment. In the upcoming months, students will be able to show off their talent at the International Thespian Festival (ITF) held in January. ITF is a yearly festival for high school theatre students, which includes workshops, performances, college auditions, and the Thepsy Award, which is a great opportunity for the students.
