The theater department put on a performance titled The Play That Goes Wrong, where a play is performed inside of another play. The production inside the play was about the murder of a young man that occurred before his engagement party, where the characters try to figure out who killed the young man. Throughout the play, different pieces of evidence showed up and made it impossible for the audience to decipher who the perpetrator was.
Typically, most things would go smoothly in the theater plays, but for this one, the play inside the play was understaffed and resources were limited. Due to this, many events go wrong throughout their play, such as forgotten lines, items that got broken, improvised replacements and much more.
Junior Mia Wilson played Chris, who was the inspector in the pretend play. Wilson decided to participate in the production because it is one of her favorite plays. She said, “I love the play that goes wrong. I saw it first in New York on a theater field trip, and I fell in love with it. When I was on vacation, I saw it again. It was my favorite play.” Wilson went about how excited she was when the play was chosen and announced to the theater department.
Senior Brynlee Olley has loved theater since her sophomore year. Olley played Rachel and in the performance she played a character in the play inside the play named Mary. Olley explained the preparation process, “It is a very tech-heavy show, so there are a lot of set pieces involved, but it is coming together nicely. I think in the next two weeks, everything will end up going according to plan.”
Olley was not the only cast member who was optimistic about the way that their performance would go; junior Cassie Tanner also expressed that she felt like the show was going to go well. Tanner played Denise, who portrayed a maid named Perkins in the production. She explained how the cast for this show has worked continuously since December to perfect this show. Tanner said, “We have been running it a lot, so I think that it will all go well.” In the couple of months that they worked on the play, they made a lot of improvement and stayed dedicated to hard work.
This play was executed pleasantly. The cast was talented and it was remarkable how well they portrayed the different characters. They also made mishaps that were rehearsed many times as it seemed like it was the first time that they happened. These mishaps made the show incredibly funny and entertained the audience greatly. All in all, this performance could be seen as chaotic, hilarious and a great experience.
