Many students at our school participate in clubs that offer volunteer activities on and off campus, helping the community and people who need support. Some of these clubs include Random Acts of Kindness (RAK), Operation Smile, Key Club, and Leo Club.
Two juniors, Ethan Hancey and Sahana Puri, are officers of Leo Club. Leo Club is known for not having a specific aim toward one particular group of people; they help the whole community. The club organizes activities such as selling snacks at soccer games, giving cards to hospitalized patients, and helping families with Thanksgiving food. Puri said, “I think we [Puri and Hancey] wanted to join because we live to serve. We really just want to make an impact in the community in general.”
Junior Claire Ramos is one of the co-presidents of the RAK Club, which focuses on making a positive impact at school. During the homecoming carnival, the club hosted a free bake sale. Ramos explained, “It was really successful, and I was happy to see other people’s reactions.” Her inspiration for this club came from a Pinterest board. Ramos hopes for RAK to have a lasting impact even after she graduates.
Junior Medha Sivakumar is the vice president of Operation Smile. Operation Smile is a club that helps and donates to children with cleft lips or those who need surgery due to dental problems. She decided to join during her freshman year because some of her friends joined, and over time, she found the club really fun and entertaining. Operation Smile mostly engages in volunteer events and fundraisers to raise money and donate to children in need.
Senior Lexi Swint, the treasurer of Operation Smile, pointed out how many service opportunities the club provides. Swint remarked, “We [the club] have a lot of different community service projects that really help out the community in a different way.” She also mentioned, “Homecoming carnival is always fun to do, and definitely just group projects as a whole society.”
Junior Hannah Nough is the co-president of Key Club. Key Club is an international organization focused on promoting education for the younger generation. Nough commented, “I’m really interested in helping younger generations and helping kids… and I wanted to join a club that’s based on volunteering opportunities.” This club started last year but was discontinued due to COVID. Nough expressed her satisfaction with the club since its return. The club has grown a lot and made a great impact on the community, bringing the school together. Although this club’s target is mostly children and their education, it sometimes helps other parts of the community as well.
