The dancers worked nonstop to make the winter dance concert come to life. The dance concert is primarily student-run as the dancers have to do most of the tasks. This includes their own choreography, their own dances, and the lighting. The show was meant to be a gift for them to finally show off the hard work they have done over the course of months.
The dancers started to prepare for the concert in September. This consisted of choreography, technique, programs for the show, social media, tickets, and costumes. Everyone in the dance company put in a lot of effort to make this show the best that it could have been.
Senior Alexa Matteson, a Moveo Company dancer, the highest level of dance offered. She has danced since she was two and has performed in seven concerts for Moveo. Matteson mentioned, “Probably just stress because it’s a big deal and I know that we put so much work into it that we just want it to be perfect.” The girls were faced with a lot of pressure because they wanted to make the concert reflect their talent.
Junior Christabel Igbinlba, also a dancer on Moveo, talked about the preparation that the girls did before the show. She said, “I would say it takes an hour and 30 [minutes] for makeup and all that, and then setting up lights and costumes.” The dancers also have to do the stage lights, which takes away time from makeup, costumes, and hair.
Their instructor, Rebecca Miller, has helped them with the show from the sidelines. Miller has danced since she was young and thought that after high school, she would have to part ways with her passion for dance. Years later, when there was an opportunity for a dance instructor, she decided to take it.
The dance concert was not just a performance; it was a display of hard work and talent. Miller said, “It gives them an opportunity to showcase not only their technique and performance, but also choreography if they had the chance to choreograph. It brings them together as a class in a community.” These concerts have been appreciated by the dancers for many years, and they will continue to look forward to them.
