Besides the band welcomes you if you need something or if something is disturbing you marching or nonmarching related they will help you in what you need. Several members mentioned that the competition did not cause them stress because it is fun, sophomore Max Hindes is the saxophonist for the marching band, he explained “we kind of stick with each other during practices and games”
Some of the members were sick during the preparation and competition. Senior flutist Lily Hindes mentioned that it was difficult for her since she was ill. Her goal was to get into second or first place. Hindes said, “It was hard but I was also sick, so that was part of it, but I managed to push through it and I am proud of myself because I made it through.” She remarked,”for next time, I think, just not being hard on myself when I mess up and just keep pushing.”
Drum major Addison Smith, a senior , said that the competition felt calm since the band had been prepared since summer. Smith mentioned being happy with the placement but believed that there could be room for improvement. Smith had a good way to manage anxiety by focusing on progress.“ I try to recognize how far we have come as a band,”she mentioned,” I rather be happy with what we have right now rather than just setting the expectations a lot higher.”
Director of band Benjamin Sampayan said that during competitions he doesn’t focus on placement during competitions. “My only goal and expectation is that the students go in prepared to have a good show.” he mentioned. he added that performers can only control their own work:” there’s nothing you can do ethically to affect another group performance. All you can do is focus on their own performance”
Most band members said they felt welcomed and had no trouble connecting with their teammates. Even during difficult moments, the band supported each other and stepped in whenever someone needed help.
