What is Wrestling

Wrestling is a combat sport practiced worldwide. While many find it intense and entertaining, others see it as confusing and complicated.

Wrestling is undeniably physical, but it also demands significant mental toughness. The sport requires grit, strong conditioning, discipline, and strength.

One major element that sets wrestling apart from other sports is its weight-class system. Wrestlers must maintain a specific weight to compete. For example, if an athlete weighs in at 120 pounds, they must remain at that weight; they cannot gain or lose pounds once the class is set. The sport also uses a unique point system that can take newcomers time to learn.

Despite its difficulty, wrestling has its benefits. Sophomore wrestler Ekaterina Pincus explained, “I would say wrestling is incredibly hard… but you make a lot of friends and it is helpful for lots of other sports. It takes strength, determination, and being conditioned to running.”

Training plays a major role in preparing wrestlers for competition. Head coach Alexander Pavlenko described their process: “We start off with mental toughness with Damien Tippett so we make sure they get the right mindset. Coach Claire helps us with strength and conditioning, so we make sure we are strong and physically fit. Technique-wise, it is me and about 14 other coaches who have worked individually with each athlete to make sure their technique, setups, and skill on the mat are the best they can be.”

When asked about common mistakes wrestlers make, Pavlenko focused on mindset. “Every match is the same. It doesn’t matter if it’s a dual meet at our school, at another school, or at the state championship. They have to prepare the same way, not overthink it, and not make it bigger than what it actually is.”

The scoring system in wrestling can be tricky for new spectators. A takedown is worth two points, an escape is one, a reversal is two, and a near fall earns two or three points depending on how long the opponent is held. Penalty points are worth one or two points depending on the foul, and additional team points are awarded based on the results of each match.

Like many sports, wrestling has a strong impact on self-esteem. Sophomore Isabella Montano shared, “Wrestling gives me confidence in my strength and in myself. After a really hard practice or a really hard match, I feel very confident in myself because I did that.”

Overall, wrestling builds strength, discipline, and mental toughness. Those qualities are essential for success, which is why wrestling stands out as one of the more complex and demanding sports.
