2021 senior athletes: record breaking seasons, state championships, awards
From a year that began with uncertainty and canceled seasons, to a final quarter defined by senior athletes’ accomplishments, this year’s sports teams had wins at state, regional/ conference awards, and beat school records.
Badminton
Badminton continued on with their state championship-winning streak going from a 3 peat to 4 straight championships. Multiple players took wins as well; Ashley Rodarte alongside Nikhita Jayarja took first place in doubles and Kate Mcpherson was runner up in singles. Mcphersonn for singles and Jayarja/Rodarte in doubles were awarded All Premier Regio’s first team.
Swim and dive
For dive, Brooklyn Larson, and Kenzie Wagner took 8th and 14th respectively. Gerardo Rios took 6th place. Boys swim ended in 6th place and girls in 13th.
Cross country
As a team boys cross country took 11th, and girls took third, the highest placement for girls cross country in school history. Kylie Miller took 19th with a time of 19:06.
Girls volleyball
Volleyball was state runner-up while Jenna Heller took offensive player of the year and Jordan Suan awarded defensive player of the year. Ella Rud and Alyssa Montoya were awarded All Premier Region’s first team.
Golf
Girls golf ended at state taking 6ths overall.
Wrestling
Caleb Milnes at 170lbs finished runner up while Jacob Hanson at 195 lbs came in 4th. Alex Gutierrez, Gavin Cochran, and Milnes were all awarded All Premier Region’s first team.
Track and field
At the start of track and field state, Samatha Rogers took 7th earning Perry their first set of points. Makayla Long broke the state record in shot put with a throw of 53ft 3.5in and took first in state championships with a throw of 50ft 8in.
Football
Grant Sands for snapper was awarded All Premier Region’s first team.
Boys basketball
Christain Tucker was awarded first team in All Premier Region.
Girls basketball
Nicole Smith received offensive player of the year.
Baseball
Carter Richey received the offensive player of the year award, and Justin Still was awarded first team in All Premier Region.
Senior sports athletes walk away this year with not just the awards but their ability to have a season at all, where they all got to play together one last time.
