The six seniors pose together as a family.

The softball team finished the 2014 season with a 16-14 record. The team made it to the playoffs and faced Corona del Sol in the opening round. They lost the game against Corona 10-1.

The team had many positives this season. “We had a core group of strong seniors that gelled well with the younger players,” head coach Kevin Chapin said.

The girls also found a positive with their batting. They had a team batting average .342. As for individuals, senior captain Laynee Gomez lead the team with a batting average of .462 and 16 stolen bases. “I just kept doing what I’ve been doing for years and just try to hit the ball on the ground,” Gomez said.

Other players stepped up at the plate as well. Junior Payton Fry brought in 18 runs and while senior Alyssa Barlow contributed 32 hits and a batting average of .444.

Clearly the teams strength was batting. If there was a weakness, it would have to be on the mound. The team had an ERA of 5.29 and 90 strikeouts which are not ideal numbers. Barlow and sophomore Taylor Vogel were the two main pitchers for the team who fought hard throughout the season. “[A negative] was losing in the first round of the playoffs, but a positive was that I matured as a pitcher,” Vogel said.

There is always a negative that comes with every season and this year there was a big one. At the end of the season, Chapin announced that he resigned as head coach. “[I made this decision] because I’m pursuing other things that will not allow me to coach,” Chapin said.

This team was very close especially the six seniors and Chapin. Even though the team is loosing great leaders and a passionate coach, the softball team is in good hands with amazing young talent.
