Winter dance fails to impress

As the winter dance approaches, students are making plans. From finding a date, to picking the perfect dress, students are getting excited for Student Government’s’ newest dance.

Although it seems like it’s going to be a formal dance, it isn’t. According to president of StuGo, Aaron Clouse, “[the dance will] have a couple food trucks, a whole bunch of games, board games, a big Jenga, stuff like that.”

This will please many people, because they don’t have to spend money on dresses and fancy suits. To me, it sounds dull, as I already play Jenga and blast good music at my house with my friends. A majority of students, including myself, are not going. It does not seem interesting going to a dance, especially when it is not going to fully be a dance.

Despite the fact that Clouse has major power in organizing the dance, activities director Kevin Ames has the big say for what the plans are that night. Ames mentioned he wanted to have six chaperones, making sure student won’t “cross the line,” but the more chaperones there are at a dance, the less fun it may be, because they are going to be watching us the whole time. It definitely makes me uncomfortable having a teacher watch me dance or take selfies with my friends.

After talking to Ames and Aaron Clouse, I spoke with random Perry Students. From all the students interviewed, only freshman Moreseller Ector is the only one who is planning on going to the dance. He said he was going, “just to have fun,” and after telling him the specific dance details, he simply said, “it’s pretty cool.” Even though many freshmen are going to get an experience of a different type of high school dance, For older students, however, who have gone to several high school dances, this may not seem as interesting as past dances were.

Hopefully StuGo plans something better for the next dance, that way more students are involved and interested in going. Chances are, if you go with the right people, you are bound to have lots of fun, but at this point, StuGo should plan more carefully to make dances one theme, and not mismatch two different styles.
