School spirit needs to make a comeback
November 19, 2015
High school is hard work, that is understandable. Homework, sitting in class for 5+ hours a day, finals, etc. So where can high schoolers have fun? By having school spirit, that is how. Participating in spirit week, assemblies, student section at the games, and by supporting your school even on social media are examples of school spirit.
Spirit weeks are usually held in the week leading up to a school event, it consists of 5 themes for each of the 5 school days in which people dress up with the theme. Some examples are pajama day, twin day, etc. It can be so much fun if people put in the effort and participate. However, there will always be people who think they are too cool to take part in such actions. Senior at Perry High School, Clarissa Mews says, “Students don’t seem to have a lot of school spirit here.”
Student participation is also just a fun way to make school a little lighter and easy. Spirit week, football games, cheering at assemblies and even encouraging your school on social media. Senior at PHS Mazzy Smith encourages, “It’s not hard to do, and it can be a lot of fun [to have school spirit]”. Let’s be real, isn’t learning just so much more fun when you’re wearing pajamas?
The Connecticut Association of Schools sheds light in regards to student participation, “They perform better academically, are more socially and civically engaged, and are happier in general than their less-spirited peers” If the students at Perry would perk up a little and even just dress up for spirit week, not only would it be fun for everyone, it would bring us closer as a school and may help academic performance.
StuGo works reasonably hard to try to make school more enjoyable for students. So students should enjoy it, instead of worrying about what other people think.
So cheer as loud as you can during games, tweet about Perry as much as you can, do as many spirit days as you can. Come on Pumas, it’s so easy to have fun!
