The boys and girls club is a club that helps the community by giving teenagers resources like food, water, or an air conditioning place to stay, they also give them a place to stay instead of the streets. The clubs give them the opportunity to stay in school and avoid getting in trouble.
Junior Aurora Archer is the organizational representative and the keystone president for the boys and girls club. She won an award for her great impact on the community and on the boys and girls club. Archer is the organizational representative and she admitted that it was a lot to handle. The process was for the participants, 10 to 11 kids participating in total, to join a program for about 6 months where they went against each other to write an essay and give a speech which were presented twice in front of judges, Archer also mentioned going to state in about 2 weeks.
Archer admitted how terrifying it was being in the news even if she was only there for about 4 minutes, she said, “getting up there and talking about your life story in front of a lot of people that you do not know is terrifying.”
The speech Archer had prepared was mentioned and said multiple times during news and in other events like an auction for raising money, a breakfast with her friends and family, a gala, and appearing in other newspapers. She expressed the gala as something intense, Archer was 15 hours at the gala preparing for her speech, 5 of those hours were spent at a lunch dinner, she remarked, “I was sitting there and people were like ‘oh i know her’ but I did not knew them and had no idea who they were.”
Multiple people had reached out to her since she won the award, she mentioned having over 10 emails every day, specifically now that she is getting closer to state, and having little time to answer them during lunch, some of them reached out to her by the medium manager of the boys and girls club. She balanced between her lunch time with friends and answering emails every day while memorizing her speech.
Archer’s method to keep school and the boys and girls club in balance was to stay up late at night to memorize and take care of school work. She also mentioned people reaching out to her to help her go to places she wanted to go, Archer expressed her content with how helpful everyone was acting with her.
Even if the process was harsh and difficult Archer’s efforts seem to be positively impacting on her life and future.
