Counsellors Holli Cagle and Kirstin Gregg reignited the MPOWRD meetings for students. This program encourages students to attend the wellness room on Thursdays during conferences. During sessions, students participate in small lessons and group discussions about healthy ways to work on addiction. MPOWRD is a support program led by students who share and relate experiences to one another and learn new ways to deal with personal problems.
MPOWRD’s tools are given to school administrators who want the program implemented in their school. MPOWRD claimed, “It provides a platform for teens to share their experiences and support each other in a structured environment” (mpowrd.org). Students and faculty can also find a one-hundred-and-four-page ASU teen research article that is public on their website. This article goes over all of the topics and guidelines for students and teachers to find any unanswered questions about the program.
Sessions are one hundred percent confidential and stay in this environment. The administration’s goal for MPOWRD is to provide students with a trusted resource to work on possible addiction issues. There are a wide variety of reasons that students can go to these sessions, such as procrastination, substance addiction, anxiety, not doing homework, etc.
A typical session goes through a few basic procedures and rules. Cagle explained, “We go over the basic rules, we do an introduction of students and all say one positive thing they did that week, a check-in one-five scale about your week, then at the end of the session we all take a pledge for confidentiality”. Students are thoroughly walked through instructions and rules every session.
MPOWRD is another great source in the school’s already impactful mental health platforms for students to come together and learn healthy ways to grow.
