Perry Sparrow Club is first in Arizona

Sparrow Club is a service driven organization that aims to increase student activity in the community. This is the first year Perry has had a chapter even though the program has been around since the 1990’s. Originally started in Oregon, the program was brought over to Arizona by junior Brittany Tomes.

Tomes elaborated, “I used to live in Oregon where they had Sparrow Club at my school so when I moved to Arizona I wanted to bring the program here. It is amazing because you get service hours, you get to help a kid, and it is just a fun experience.”

Tomes is the president of the club because she is responsible for setting up the program here at Perry. She, along with her friend Elisa Thomas, reached out to the national director to see how they could start the club. Along with school administration and the club sponsor, Black Rock Coffee, the girls created the program and received time in the Winter Assembly to advertise the club to the students and faculty.

Vice president Thomas added, “Perry is the first Sparrow club in Arizona so I think that is so cool that we get to be the first ones to do that.”

The way the club works is each year a kid with substantial medical needs is selected to be the “Sparrow”. The club partners with the sponsor to raise money for the kid. The club sets a goal to reach 256 service hours in the community throughout the school year and in exchange the sponsor promises to provide the money for the Sparrow’s medical needs.

Tomes added, “We realize students are in other clubs or don’t have time for clubs so you don’t have to be a member of Sparrow club to submit hours. You can pick up a voucher and fill it out any time you do service hours.”
