Math Club is making a comeback

Despite what people believe, the Math Club does more than solving equations. The members go to competitions and compete in different math levels from Algebra 2 to Calculus for awards.

Every year, the existence of the club depends on the demand from students for the club. In the past few years, the group has been on and off. The chance of winning a competition is also dependent on how many people join the club.

The sponsor for the club changes every year as well. This year, Calculus and Statistics teacher Thomas Rothery has decided to shoulder the task of sponsoring the club.

“We’ve had a math club off and on for the past three or four years. It’s basically based on the interests of the students. So if they want it then we’ll do something to support it,” Rothery explains.

Anyone can join, regardless of grade and current level of math. However, in order to participate in the competitions, the member must be outstanding at a certain level of math depending on what level they wish to compete in. That member is then chosen by the club president, who is Grant William as of right now, to participate in the contest. The student participating will then get to miss a day of school for the tournament to compete against fellow competitors in their math level.

Principal Dan Serrano says, “I think we will do very well because our math scores are high. This school is full of smart kids.”

Grant Williams is a sophomore and this is his first year as a member and as president. He also started the club back up this year. Although this is his first year as a member and the president, he has high hopes that the club will accomplish a lot in the upcoming competitions.

Last year, the club received second place at the Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) competition.

“In the future, maybe we could progress to hosting a competition at Perry,” Grant says. “We have a lot of promising individuals [in the club] and that we would do pretty well [in the competitions].”

The Math club has been very successful in acquiring awards at their competitions, in fact just recently on Nov. 4 the club received first place in the Level II competition at CGCC. Grant wishes to bring the club back again next year, and he hopes the club will continue to do just as well and maybe even better.
