Jasper Lee’s success in magic captures school attention

Lee’s cards fall right into place

Hidden talents roam the halls daily, and for those like junior Jasper Lee, people can begin to take notice of such novelty.

His love for magic began around the age of five, but he never thought he would be able to pick up a deck of his own.

Lee began practicing magic his freshman year after a friend brought a deck of cards to show him a few tricks. Interest sparked and he turned to the internet to learn all he could. Now that the fundamentals are locked down, Lee just needs to hone in on his craft.

“I definitely plan on doing Perry Idol,” Lee said. “I was there last year but never performed because I didn’t think about actually doing it until my friends said [to].”

The tricks come with a performance aspect to them; after all, entertainment comes from a magician’s goofy persona and distracting questions they may ask a participant.

Lee sometimes performs on the streets, around the mall, or for anyone who will stop and watch. In fact, history teacher Jason Myers allotted class time to allow a trick to be shown.

“I got to do magic under his direction. He did an amazing card trick, I can’t even describe it. It was cool,” Myers continued, “In class we talked about Jasper actually changing his name to Magic.”

Myers believes it takes a lot of practice and self-discipline to be able to learn such tricks, which can translate into helpful life experiences.

Along with teachers, students are taking notice as well.

Junior Timothy Pung said, “My favorite trick [was when] one day he just came up to me and asked me to name any card. I told him 4 of hearts and out of his backpack, he pulled out his wallet and sitting in there was the 4 of hearts.”

Lee has continuously amazed people with his tricks and “magic will definitely help with confidence and public speaking as he is constantly performing in front of crowds,” Pung said.

His favorite thing about having a talent such as magic is “you just always get to meet new people.”

As for his future, “I guess you could say the dream is to headline a show in Las Vegas,” Lee said.
