Battle of the Sexes

Perry high school’s improv team faced off last week against the state champions. Who were the state champions? Themselves. Friday, January 22, 2016, was the Perrywinkles first ever “Battle of the Sexes” game. This game was a face off between the boys and the girls and the whole team was very excited.

An improv game consists of two teams facing off and competing in completely unrehearsed, improvised games in order to win the audience vote. The funniest and most energetic team usually wins the vote. Before the battle, theatre teacher Shawna Marquis claimed, “I think that there’s going to be a lot of good energy between the two teams.”

With all the good energy, the teams were going to have to work even harder then they had ever done before.  Senior, Ryan Dunn and  co-captain of the team, stated “it will be good to play someone on a similar skill level,” while Marquis added, “because we are playing each other, we know our strengths and  weaknesses.” Having rehearsed countless hours together, the Perrywinkles knew what other members of their team can and cannot do. Whoever wants the win more will have to take good advantage of that.

Dunn claimed, “both teams really want to win and we’ve all worked together a lot, it will be fun to play off of each other because the chemistry of already having played together.” And of course, being a member of the boys team believed, “the boys are going to win, there is no question about it.”

Senior Hannah Brown is a member of the girls team and confidently proclaimed, “obviously the girls are going to slay and kill it, so watch out boys.”

Both teams believed they were the best, but which can claim they are the state champions who beat the state champions? In a close game, with two points separating the teams, the girls defeated the boys.

Overall, everyone involved had fun, with Dunn summed up the evening saying, “when we have a lot of fun the audience in turn has a lot of fun.” Improv games are fun and lighthearted events, but bring the element of competition out in the teams.
