Challenges students face with change to online classes
Moving from regular school to online school is a big change happening during the last semester and students are feeling it. Students are trying to adapt to this form of learning, and with online school being new to most it comes with challenges dealing with not only the work but also how students are mentally.
“Some challenges that come with online school are definitely motivational aspects. It’s hard to actually put in the work and devote the time to online school, because students don’t really want to, so the work is not as great as it could be” senior Kylee Engelke stated. Students are having to now deal with more time on their hands and are struggling to time manage their schoolwork. Before online school students had half their for in school, learning material; they now have to find the motivation to do it themselves.
Sophomore Mary Mckinnon commented; “Sometimes it’s hard to learn the material just from the few instructions they give”. With this new form of learning there is less teacher-student interaction wich is resulting in students not understanding some of the material or not truly learning at all. Students are learning material from a few slides on a PowerPoint or completing worksheets.
Challenges like those and similar ones are impacting many students like junior Kenna Ketcher explaining; “Some challenges I’ve had facing online school is not being able to ask questions to my teachers immediately like I would during class.” Students and teachers are trying their best to communicate with email or Google Classroom but rarely is it able to be instant. In classes, normally there is a lot of explanation and questioning from students and teachers are now missing with only school.
With this new form of learning what is being taught and assigned has changed to adapt. “I find the workload a lot easier, and I can knock out the week’s assignments in a day,” Engelke explains, adding, “but I really miss the social aspect of school.” The amount of work given to students in a week is minimal, but to the students it comes with a sacrifice. For students the motivation of going to school is seeing not only their friends but teachers, and being social with one another. Without social interaction, there is less motivation taking a tole on students not just academically but also mentally.
With the new online learning comes with new challenges students are now trying to navigate and push through in these uncertain times.
