Moveo takes on new recruits

Perry’s amazing dance team, Moveo, is back with a new company. This year, almost half of the team’s dancers are new. With a team of 17, having 7 new girls to train will be quite the challenge. However, “all of them have shown a lot of promise. In dance camp, I was impressed with a lot of them,” Moveo’s dance teacher, Fara Sadler, shared.

The audition process for Moveo, is rigorous and demanding. All members of the team have to re-audition each year and secure a spot on the team the next year. The auditions are usually a week long and require a large application and a high level of technique and dance experience. Moveo isn’t messing around. The dancers on this team are Perry’s finest. Sadler anticipates that the dancers who are returning to the team from previous years will, “step into leadership roles or already have stepped into leadership roles. Whether that means leading warm-ups, or choreography, or just sending out reminders to the group.”

The dance team does not have just one star dancer. Each dancer presents strengths and weaknesses. While one may have amazing jumps and leaps, another’s strong suit may be turning. With this dynamic, they encourage each other to grow as dancers and people. This year, the Moveo dancers have an intense schedule. Not only do they perform at all assemblies, they also have dance concerts, out of state trips, other dance opportunities, volunteering and fundraising. Although Moveo  “is a really young company,” as Sadler put it, they have a promising season ahead of them.

With the addition of the new c building, the dance department gained a new dance room. With 1-3 dance classes each hour, the dancers sometimes had nowhere to hold class. On occasion, when none of the gyms, dance rooms or the auditorium were available, they held class in the hallway of the E building. An addition to the space was desperately needed. The new dance room has given all the dance classes a place to hold their class each hour.  “It’s like heaven on Earth,” Sadler gushed. The room is in the D building behind the auditorium, where the art and film study rooms used to be. There is also a room next to the dance room that functions as storage and an office for the dance teachers. With a door to the stage, Moveo’s dance concerts became a lot easier to run. However, the dance room was not just handed to the dance department. It came after plenty of requests for more space and a continuous struggle to get it.

“I honestly didn’t believe it until I saw it,” Sadler revealed. After all the stress and hard work, it finally paid off: the dance department has a wonderful new dance room and extra space to work hard at what they love.
