The Perry girls soccer regular season officially ended on Jan. 24 with a 0-0 tie against Hamilton, ranked number four in the state, earning a playoff berth. The team made it through to the semifinals, ranking them number six in the state and number seventeen in the country.

“We gave them the keys to the car,” said varsity coach John Roberts, detailing how he leads his team. They used every last drop of gas in the car to drive the group to their greatest potential and eventually became closer as a team.

Prior to the postseason, senior captain Kiara Parker said, “We have a very good possibility to take it all the way to the championship, but we have to take it one game at a time, we can’t take it for granted that we have easy games at the beginning.”

Throughout the season the team played at the top of their game, earning their 19-2-1 record.

Junior Delaney Uyeshiro said, “We have a great shot at making it, we just have to be calm, composed, and play our game.” This season was a time of tough work and preparation as they pursued their goal of making it to the championship.

The team put all their energy into each game earning them a spot in the semifinals. After the quarter finals game, Junior Emma Richey said, “The biggest thing is recovering and taking our next practices seriously and see what we need to change from the last time we played Xavier.”

The girls have been bonding throughout the season and can spontaneously make a serious situation into a fun and enjoyable one. The upperclassmen as well as the underclassmen have assisted in the overall mood and spirit.

“The [younger players] attitude and energy has helped the rest of the team. They do their talking through their hard work,” said Roberts.

The team knows the importance of working and striving to reach their goal of state. They used that knowledge to lift their weight and help carry the team to the semifinals after a thrilling 2-1 home victory over Chandler High at home in the quarterfinals on Feb. 4.

The JV A soccer team had a productive and successful season with an 11-1 record. The team started preparing at the start of the year. “They set goals for themselves, we made a poster of what we wanted to achieve by the end of the year,” said junior varsity coach Kimberly Oltmanns.

The JV girls had two main goals: beat Hamilton and go undefeated. They did beat Hamilton 1-0, but they lost one game. Oltmanns said, “My motto going in was don’t let this team be the the team that takes you away from your goals.”
