Boys golf goes to state
The boy’s golf team have placed better this past week than they have throughout the whole season. The most notable of players including senior, Mike Finnegan, and sophomores, Ryan Macpherson and Caden Christopherson.
In the past Finnegan has said that they “have the ability to do it [they] just haven’t quite put it together yet..” but more recently he’s said that “It’s honestly… just that [it’s] all starting to connect.” The team has known since the beginning of the season, that they would be able to compete in state. Now that the time has come, they’re already in fifth place.
Just in the course of two days and one tournament, the boys moved from seventh to fifth and are ready to take on Chaparall, the number one ranked school. Macpherson said that “separately each of the players have played good but the [Chandler City Shootout] was the first time we all did good together.” They scored -1 on Monday and in the tournament over the weekend, they shot an even par. With four players on Monday’s tournament, they average out the scores of all the players. With such a great score, all the boys have played well together. Finnegan said that’s a “big confidence booster right before state. ”
Sophomore Ryan Macpherson has only been playing golf competitively since his freshman year and is already playing in the top five. His teammate Caden Christopherson has been playing in the number one spot for the past couple tournaments, making a great name for the class of 2019.
Although some of the beginning tournaments weren’t “the best”, the scores are averaged out throughout the season, giving the team an advantage with all of their recent victories. As long as they “just keep doing what [they’re] doing” they should be set for state, said Finnegan.
The state tournament will be held on November 7 and 8 at Grand Canyon University.
