Brothers excel in clutch moments

Cutter Hatch ran onto the field with about 4:15 remaining in the first quarter, replacing Kenny Fultz as the running back alongside quarterback Brock Purdy. Nate James lined up as the wide out on the left side. Ten seconds later, another receiver began his motion from Purdy’s left. These were all clues that Mesquite could have picked up on to prevent the finesse and tactical brilliance that was about to ensue.

Afterwards Hatch boldly stated “If one player messes up, the whole play doesn’t work. In that play, we were lucky; everyone did their job…with all of our blocking we got it done”.

The Puma player went in motion, Hatch received the snap and handed it to the player in motion, who then pitched the ball to D’Shayne James on Purdy’s right side. While this ensued, Nate stood complacent, acting as if he were waiting on a screen pass from Purdy, confusing the Wildcat linebackers.

Offensive coordinator Adam Schiermyer later said that the purpose of this trickery was to “see if we could score a touchdown on a big play and we did”.

D’Shayne immediatey caught the pitch and ran directly behind Purdy towards the left side of the backfield. While all of these moving pieces were fitting into place, Nate James began to streak towards the Mesquite sideline.

“Nate gets open, he’s the wideout receiver, he goes for a deep route and I just bomb it to him” D’Shayne later added.

Even though Nate was double covered on the play, he confidently insisted that the play was a piece of cake when asked about the difficulty of the hail-mary-like catch.

“No, the play is designed for me to fake…for at least two seconds and then just take off. The corner(backs) weren’t really good so it was easy for me to make the catch”.

This kind of synergy is something that could only come from two brothers that have most likely been concocting plays just like this in the backyard for years now.

D’Shayne loves playing with his brother, saying that “I couldn’t imagine it being like this. It’s great”.

Nate also enjoys the family ties on the team, adding that “It’s pretty cool I’ve been waiting for this for a long time”.
