Wrestling Team Moves Forward Towards State

The wrestling team has circled around a core group of seniors to fight in the rankings. On the road to state, Perry has several wrestlers fighting their way towards the big championship..

Yet the team is going into the playoffs as more than individuals fighting for glory, Senior Angel Melendez described the team as “more of a brotherhood” and followed up by saying, “this is probably the most interconnected team we have ever had.” Melendez will be attempting to place in the top four in sectionals to make his last run at a state playoff. He believes the competition will be difficult stating, “we have probably one of the most difficult sections in the state there’s a lot of great wrestlers.” However, this will not halt their efforts to driving through sectionals and having a solid group to represent at the state championships.

Another notable wrestler Jack Long – who has wrestled 10 pounds up all season – believes, “we have a good chance to send about 7 wrestlers.” Long is also uncertain if he can overcome the most competitive section to make state. Yet, regardless of the outcome he assures, “I will put up a fight.”

Despite their struggles facing early losses to Basha and a later loss to Marana and Sunnyside,  they have managed to recover with great performances as a team. The state championships will take place tonight and tomorrow in Prescott.
