At the close of their season, with an 11-7-3 record, the boys soccer team came close to making the playoffs. How close?
0.143 power points away.
During the final week of January, the team believed they would make the playoffs, especially after rattling off five wins in their final six games. They were No. 15 in the AIA Power Rankings, and felt they played a tough enough schedule to get them into the playoffs.
“There were only two games played on Thursday [after they had 15th place],” junior Tanner Hedger explained, “so we were pretty confident that those games wouldn’t affect us.”
That all ended when the AIA announced that Mesa High, not Perry, would take that 16th spot in the division-I playoffs.

The Pumas – who were a gritty, hard-working group – were left at No. 17. No playoffs. Season over.
The AIA, however, does not select teams – like NCAA basketball or football; they base their playoff brackets on their power point system.
Never the less, the season was one of overcoming the odds.
Much of their success can be attributed to team captains Mitchell Albrecht and Zach Johnson, who, according to head coach John Roberts, “carry the team and the players really look up to [them].”

Although injuries handicapped them in 2014, Roberts said “other players have been able to step up and fill in those positions.”

Moving forward, Roberts is optomistic about his program.“Now that we have a plan in place, an off-season plan, and I know the players, it’s going to help us a lot.”
