Founded in 1948, In-n-Out has remained one of the top fast food restaurants and has become a popular spot to order food and hang out with friends. Their basic menu consists of all of the originals, such as the cheeseburger, hamburger, french fries, and shakes. Apart from the basic menu, In-n-Out also offers a hidden menu selection for those who enjoy their burgers made differently.
Referred to as their “not-so-secret menu” In-n-out offers additional ways to serve their classic cheeseburger or hamburger. They offer multiple patties, mustard fried buns, animal style, protein style, grilled cheese, as well as some fun drinks. Currently the In-n-Out flying dutchman, which is a cheeseburger/burger served without any buns, is going viral on the app TikTok. Multiple influencers have recommended the flying dutchman wrapped with slices of grilled onion served with the bright yellow banana peppers.
The viral grilled onion wrapped burger is a very bland option compared to other options on the not-so-secret menu. Since it is a double patty, it tastes very heavily of just meat and the grilled onions hardly add any sort of flavor. While the onions added a slight crunch, it was hard to really enjoy the sweetness of them with the overpowering taste of the burger patties. The viral burger tasted better with the spicy banana peppers as they added a slight kick and tangy flavor, but without it, it’s mainly just a greasy pile of meat.
Animal style is a very popular hidden menu item as it can be added to both fries and burgers. It is a mixture of In-n-Out’s spread as well as chopped grilled onions. Served over fries, it adds a significant amount of flavoring. While it does taste good, the amount of spread slathered onto the fries makes the fries a bit soggy. On burgers, it adds the additional mustard fried buns which adds a tangy flavoring.
For a healthier option, protein style is a good way to avoid the bread as well as the carbs that go with it. Protein style is a hamburger/cheeseburger fully wrapped in lettuce which takes away the general greasy feeling of the classic burger and adds a cool crunch. In-n-Out also offers grilled cheese, which is simply a burger with no patties and overall is just very plain tasting.
In-n-Out also has multiple types of hidden menu drinks. While some are mainly just simple mixtures such as an Arnold Palmer, they also offer the neapolitan shake and rootbeer floats. The neapolitan shake consists of vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate shake mixed together and while the amount of calories is shocking, the shake tastes like birthday cake and was quite enjoyable. Finally, the rootbeer float was a solid way to end a meal. Although the vanilla ice cream did make it a bit harder to drink and in the end it was mainly just a cup with vanilla milkshake texture and no rootbeer.
Overall, the In-n-Out secret menu has gained quite a bit of popularity on social media. While it has some fun menu options, it is mainly a preference menu that allows customization to their originals.
