In America, we have created laws to regulate how and when we get certain products. However, the view on what should be legal, has created a controversy among U.S. citizens. Marijuana is one the most disputed topics that has created a line between people who believe that it should be legal or illegal. Recently, Colorado and Washington have become ground breakers in making Marijuana legal on a federal level. Our country is repeating
the process of Prohibition that occurred in the 1920’s, which temporarily outlawed the sale, manufacturing and
transportation of alcohol.
This resulted in citizens in an uproar, causing crime to rise and more laws to be ratified. Marijuana being legal can decrease the amount of underhanded sale and offenses that so many American’s commit. For those on the opposite side of the spectrum, think about how alcohol causes the numerous problems it does today. Drinking and driving has killed thousands of people a year, while using Marijuana has never recorded a death. However, any substance can cause an of effect on the body and studies have even shown that it is far less dangerous than that of alcohol.
Also, while you cannot smoke Marijuana in the U.S., the highly addictive cigarette is legal and readily available and causes numerous diseases that potentially lead to death. With alcohol and cigarettes legal and obtainable to people, why is Marijuana the exception? Nevertheless, it is a concern that making Marijuana legal can further make other serious drugs, such as Cocaine or Meth, to surface into society.
That being said, Marijuana is only associated with those drugs because of its relation to other illegal and black market products. Also, making it legal can potentially make the desire or usage diminish, mainly because things that are illegal, causes some have a higher aspiration to use it.
In the end, what some might think will hurt society, can possibly help it. Taxing it might make the positive results in which the economy needs. If society quits making Marijuana a substance associated with hardcore drugs, instead of something natural, it can be legal in the U.S.
