StuGo election process
With the new school year a few months away, StuGo enters a new era, saying goodbye to their senior leaders, and new members begin to rise to the challenge. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, a variety of the activities they had planned out, like prom, could not go through.
“Quarantine has been really tough on us, especially the junior class, who has spent the past two years planning a prom that will never happen,” student body president Miri Chan stated. “Prom is one of the biggest events of our year and we’re sad that we won’t see it come to life but we have learned to move on and look forward to next year.”
Saying goodbye to seniors is another hard event, many of them losing an entire quarter of their last year as a StuGo member. Student body community service and charity liaison Sammy Cristerna said, “We also have a strong bond in that class and we just wished we could have said bye to our seniors.”
Currently, the new StuGo Executive Council has already been chosen, with a total of nine positions assigned. In the process, StuGo teacher Lerina Johnson and former president and vice president Brintley Spencer and Breezy Hill conducted interviews for president, which was soon given to junior Miri Chan. Then, the four members switched gears and interviewed for the position of vice president, giving this role to junior Kelsey Graziani, before finally assigning the rest of the positions to the remaining seven candidates after their interviews.
“Student body was an easier process because packets were already competed and everyone in student body is currently or has been in stugo before,” Chan said. “Once all positions were in place, we had already begun discussing next years plans and ideas.”
Now, the question lies on how the class elections will be like for the upcoming school year.
“Campaigning is still a work in progress for next year as for something so unprecedented has never arose,” student body secretary Nathan Lam stated. “Several options are still up in the air and we’re working on finding the most fair way for elections.”
The elections for a class position will take place in the beginning of the school year, more information about how this will take place will come out @perrystugo on twitter.
With how many unknowns there are in the world due to the pandemic, StuGo is handling the situation the best way they can and continuing to work hard to plan for an eventful year for 2020-2021.
“All of us are coming up with new ideas and events we can bring to the table next year to replace typical assignments in StuGo,” Lam noted. “We’re doing our best to start next year off with a bang and make the best events that have been created in Perry history.”
