An international education
School is almost out, and while many seniors are planning to attend colleges such as ASU, NAU, and BYU, for some students there may be a different option.
In today’s day and age, it has become possible to attend a university not only out of the state, but out of the country. Going to college outside the United States is not only an interesting opportunity, but it can also improve chances of getting a job and can be more cost effective over time. The international equivalent of a four year degree in the US can be finished in less time overseas. Many countries’ university tuition actually averages less than America’s, while giving similar credentials to an American Ivy League school.
While one may also have to consider travel expenses and room and board in a foreign land, the overall cost may outweigh going to school at home. Ashley Mikall, a student studying at the University of Edinburgh, found that getting her Master’s abroad was cheaper, since what would have taken her two years in the US only took one living in England. You may also be able to get financial aid. “While there are few scholarships available for U.S. students, because of the difference in tuition, it still ends up being an affordable decision,” said Mikall. “Additionally, you receive free healthcare and there are many student run events and free opportunities as well.”
Becoming educated overbroad can also lead to better job chances. The global market has expanded even more throughout the years, and having ties and experience dealing with different and specific cultures can make a newly-graduated college student look good in a prospective employer’s eyes. While the US was once considered the educational hub of the world, its children have slowly started to move out to other countries. Fox reporter Emily Driscoll said, “One reason is the lower cost, but another is that they could be connected to local businesses that are expanding globally.” Attending a school in another nation could be the thing that piques an employer’s interest in a new employee.
Attending a school far from home can be an amazing experience that gives students more opportunities for the same or lower price. While leaving home may be scary, it can be the first step in a blossoming career.
