Culinary and Deca unite over cookies
Marketing and baking collide as DECA and Culinary III students partner together to sell cookie creations. Originally designed to be sold for Valentines day, Culinary students made and decorated heart-shaped cookies. The high demand for these cookies, however, has paved the way for them to become regular items in the DECA store.
“Each cookie costs a dollar, and they’re selling probably about 60 a lunch, which is a lot for us to keep up with,” says Kaylie Kochanski, senior and Culinary III student.
75 cents of from each cookie sale goes back to culinary and 25 cents goes to DECA. As a result, both electives benefit from the partnership.
“Culinary sold Valentine cookies last year with the Puma Den and it was a big hit,” Natalie Eberhard, a senior member of DECA comments, “We sold 410 cookies in one week…Our average people per day that come into the store is 93, but with the cookies we had 137 average people per day come to the Puma Den.”
The cookies are cream cake flavored, topped with colorful royal icing, and adorned with sprinkles. No two cookies are exactly the same, giving the students liberty with the cookie’s appearance.
“It was a better situation where they already have the store set up and they can collect all the money and it gets deposited every day, That’s why we partnered together,” Culinary teacher Angela Stutz adds, “I also love to showcase my students work.”
The cookies provide a bond between culinary and marketing, creating an advantageous bond between both; and as a result, some sweet treats for students.
