StuGO election season
Student elections are right around the corner and there are 14 eager students ready to win your vote. This year’s candidates include: Tarin Sanford, Natalia Ramos, Olivia Thompson, Kaitlyn VanKlompenberg, Sierra Meyer, Brielle Hatch, Daniela Bastidas, Samantha Christensson, Johnny Sutorka, Aaron Clouse, Ryker Gustafson, Kati Gloss, Lauren Stebbings, and Jackson Daniels.
These fourteen students have done a lot of work to get here. Everyone knows they have had to get 10% of the school population’s votes but they have also had to demonstrate their consistency, maintaining their gpa and getting at least letter of recommendation from teachers around campus. The work does not stop there, though. The group is currently busy putting their speech videos together.
There will be two rounds of the election: the first for student body officers “, which will be held on Wednesday, April 1, and the second for class officers. To those who are not familiar with how the election goes, the 8 students who get the most votes will run for student body.“There are more stringent requirements for them to meet,” student government adviser Brandon Keeling says. The top three students who get the most votes will run for the higher positions such as president and vice president.
From there, they will be interviewed by Keeling and assistant principal Kevin Ames and the two will then decide who will be president and vice president. “Our goal in doing it that way is to prevent it from being a popularity contest,” Keeling says. “We want the students that are going to severe the community of Perry High School the best to have the most responsibility.”
The student body has done some wonderful things for the school, including organizing the skydiving team to come to our previous assembly as well as the coachella festival. Everyone should be excited to find out what the upcoming committee has in store. “These students have large goals, they have large dreams and they push the envelope to…make this a great school for the students.
As for speculation of who will be winning in the election, Keeling says he has no clue. “There have been years where I thought I knew for sure what was going to happen and something completely different happened. And there’s been other years where I’ve been spot on, he says.
Keeling adds, “I do know that all 14 students that are running are great kids and would do a fantastic job serving the student body of Perry High School.”
