Starting Off On The Right Foot
Badminton is on a winning streak after the tournament at Shadow Mountain Invitational. They won 9-7 and placed Jenna Reynolds in first place earning herself a first place award.
“I expect us to do well this year and as of right now we are 2-2 but the two losses were very close games.” Johnson also has high expectations for her athletes.
“I am hoping to win our section, [then] that will give us an automatic spot in the state team playoffs.”
She says they have “mastered hitting hard and wants them to master hitting in the right spot.” Her motto, “kill them softly”, meaning the use drop shots to target the opponents where they are at their weakest. Jenna Reynolds talks about how she thinks the team has done.
“I think we’ve done really well playing all the really hard teams we had to play… Hamilton and Chandler.” She also says that they are focused and determined to win.
“It was at Shadow Mountain Invitational that we won seven out of nine awards.”
Her personal goals consist of winning her section and also winning state. “I just need to try hard and focus.”
Johnson was awarded coach of the year last year as well, and hopefully will earn it again this year.
“She helped us improve a lot and other coaches noticed how good of a coach she was.” Johnson is also the Girls P.E teacher and spends most of her time around active people and athletes.
When asked if she would like to win Coach of the Year again this year she replied quickly with, “I sure hope not… there are just so many other coaches that work hard for their players and that deserve it.”
The Badminton competition this year should be fierce. The players have high expectations to fill and the state championship awaits them.
