More than a coach; a mentor
John Roberts’ desire to win is trumped by desire to develop character individuals
Starting strong, ending strong. Our soccer team has reached new peaks with their current score being 22 – 2. Coach Rogers has led these young talents to greater heights. Not enough could be said about our athletes, standing with them is their coach.
Even before Perry he built champions. For 31 years John has coached multiple levels in sports. Right before converting here, he coached soccer for Higley, claiming three coaches of the year awards and two regional. All impressive feats that lead him to work here at Perry. His wins did not wither here either. Coaching boys and girls alike and training them to be better. Working harder and pushing them to go higher. With the final game just in their grasp, keeping the winning streak has become the next goal.
Yet, even with producing great scores for our teams, he produced great students. Aside from sports, what makes John a unique coach is his plans for the games after the games. He stated that soccer is “a stepping stone to becoming the doctor, the lawyer, the things they really want to do” , the true game he’s preparing them for, is life.
Even without stepping into the field, most can see that they’re not just teams on the field but they’re friends, they trust each other. When asked what makes their team great, John responded “the camaraderie that they have, the love, this is a special group”. Nothing could be further from the truth and that’s what he trains them for in the long run. To make friends, memories, and have a brighter future outside the field.
Coach John Roberts does his best. Preparing athletes inside the field and out is what motivates him. Seeing the soccer team play is a whole other marvel. Even on the bench one can see that it’s more than a game, but a stepping stone for a greater future.
