Badminton goes to second consecutive state final
Perry’s badminton team had another bittersweet season, returning to the state championship, but falling to rival Xavier in a true battle.
“It wasn’t over until doubles,” said Principal Dan Serrano.
Going 13-2 in the season, the Pumas lost 3-5, but the trio of seniors — Katie Cross, Tori Albin, and Dominique Garcia — can end their final high school season knowing the legacy their past four years of growth will leave.
Senior Katie Cross said, “I only wish I had more years to play, as a senior, because I know the state title will be very soon in our hands.”
The program has been in the spotlight for its success amongst other 6A Premier teams, and now boasts the Section Coach of the Year and Section Players of the Year, Katie Cross and Jillian Lagasca.
“They’re very strong, one of our stronger programs,” said Principal Dan Serrano. “Coach Johnson takes badminton very seriously.”
Coach Lerina Johnson has no doubt achieved her goal of growing the program, as an overwhelming mass of talent fuels the team’s success.
“Personally I think we owe it all to Coach Johnson,” said junior Bella Raponi. “She has been such a supportive person in our corner from day one.”
Coach Johnson has led the Pumas to two state runner-up titles — once in 2014 and again this season.
“The determining factor to our success is Coach Johnson,” said Cross. “To remove her as a variable would essentially take out the heart of our program. We would not have gone this far if Johnson was not with us.”
Despite the loss of three seniors who have helped build the program, there is a surplus of talent awaiting the seasons to come.
“I don’t know how often in badminton you have to cut, but we have to cut in badminton,” said Principal Serrano. “I foresee it’s going to continue.”
The Pumas have certainly established themselves as a badminton powerhouse, and will walk away with pride and friendships made on-and-off the court.
Cross said, “Beyond banners, and trophies and titles, we made memories and cherished the times we had together.”
