Cubs success story finds fans in Gilbert
After 108 years, heartbroken Chicago Cubs fans may have a shot at happiness as they are playing in the World Series for the first time since 1945.
Many students and staff members here are ecstatic as well. Illinois native and senior Zach Durbin thinks “it’s really nice to see [The Cubs] having another good year. We came close last year…so hopefully this year is different.”
Another senior, Parker Olzsak added that “as a long time fan I’m just happy to see the team I’ve supported for so long have success…not that we are doing well it feels unreal.”
Durbin added that “as a Cubs fan, the phrase I have heard the most in my life is ‘you win some, you lose some’ so I’ve just stuck it out.”
Head softball coach Rob Hehe is also a believer in the hype, saying “I think they can do it”, adding in his series prediction, “I think the Cubs in 6.”
One of the biggest pros to being a Cubs fan is definitely the relatability of their many young stars, a feeling resonated by the staff and students of Perry. Olzsak’s favorite player, Kris Bryant, is his favorite “because of his high skill level he has at such a young age, he’s brought together this team the past two seasons through his leadership and baseball talent.”
Durbin is not quite as certain as to who his “favorite” may be with so many options. “[Anthony] Rizzo has been a stand up guy since he started with the Cubs. I like Bryant because of his relationship with Rizzo, as weird as that sounds. It makes them seem more human when they act like I do with my friends. I also look up to Baez and definitely Jake Arrieta, who’s had an amazing year.”
Coach Hehe also pointed out the overall depth of players, mainly, as he feels, their starting pitching depth. “Their pitching staff is ridiculous, normally the best pitching staff wins. Good hitters can be stopped by good pitching”. His favorite Cub, staying true to that statement, is upstart young thrower Kyle Hendricks.
Surely these three Cubs fans will be glued to their televisions at every point during the action in at least the next five days.
